Dr. Erik Shapiro, Associate Chair for Research for the Department of Radiology, was recently awarded a 4 year, $2.1 million NIH R01 grant to develop molecular and cellular imaging strategies for monitoring hepatocyte transplantation. Erik and his team of collaborators from University of Pittsburgh and the USDA, will seek to develop MRI methodologies for measuring the transplant success of both mouse liver cells and pig stem cell-derived liver cells following transplant into mice. If successful, pig stem cell-derived liver cells could serve as a supply for human liver cell transplantation. Read more about Eirk's NIH grant and follow Erik's lab on Facebook.
